GamerDad and family Welcome to GamerDad: Gaming with Children. My name is Andrew S. Bub - the GamerDad. I've been writing in the games industry for years now and I've devoted the last five to educating parents on gaming issues to critical acclaim. If you're looking for our GamerDad Review Archive click here. Games are fun, kids love them, and they aren't going away. So lets cut through the hype and have a real conversation about the things that matter. Video Games, Virtual Violence, and its supposed effect on children.

NYT: Gaming leads to mass reading?

According to a recent article in the New York Times titled “The Future of Reading: Using Video Games as Bait to Hook Readers”, new efforts to bring video games into traditional literary areas are happening due to “that video games also may teach a kind of digital literacy that is becoming as important as proficiency in print”. One quote postulates “I wouldn’t be surprised if, in 10 or 20 years, video games are creating fictional universes which are every bit as complex as the world of fiction of Dickens or Dostoevsky”. Also, they discuss how rich game worlds such as the one in Postal 2 have opened a dialogue around issues of race, religion and gender sensitivity. more…

NHL 09 - Budding Hockey Dad

When I was a lad in College back in 1993-94 we had a dorm tradition involving a certain kind of herbal smoke, a certain kind of fermented beverage, and wine flavored jug  - did we party with togas on? Did we break stuff and pull pranks on the wicked old Dean? Did we socialize with women at all? No, no, and no. We had NHL tournaments on SEGA Genesis. And it was oh so good.

Dead Space Cassarole

For a disgusting adult flavored holiday treat mix two cups of James Cameron’s Aliens and ID Software’s Doom 3 as a base. Then add a healthy dollop of Bioshock, System Shock 1 & 2, and pretty much every other occult/space themed horror 3D shooter. Cook until a fork comes cleanly from its bleeding and lacerated heart … then frost in goo made from Resident Evil IV pureed with creme d’Half-Life 2.

Dead Space Review

It’s dark, steamy, scary and filled with wildly careening lights. There are strange noises, blood smears on the wall, and whenever you do find someone - there’s no way you can call them a “survivor.” Abominations, corpses festooned with fangs, claws, and elongated limbs lurch then leap toward you. You fear that this IS the crew that survived. You’re alone but video and audio recorders tell you the story of what happened. God get mentions now and then. You hit pause, yep, you’re playing DOOM 3.

RPGWatch: The Whole Game in My Hand #11

Late in 2005 some friends at RPGDot came to me with the idea to do summary articles on the state on RPG gaming on the major handhelds. The release of the DS and particularly the PSP had intrigued many RPG fans who were not interested in consoles (wait, that sounds like me!), and so I put together three articles - one for the GBA, one for the DS and the last one for the PSP. The articles were very well received and when RPGWatch launched late in 2006, I was asked to update the state of handheld RPG’s once more. That is how ‘The Whole Game in My Hand’ was born.
