Mega Man 9: One Jump Forward, Two Slides Back

In honor of Mega Man 9 being released recently, I thought I’d share my opinions and experiences with past games in the original series, followed by my brief review of Mega Man 9. We’ll stick with the ORIGINAL Mega Man series, because if I went through the spin-offs (and spin-offs of spin-offs), this blog’ll be neverending. Oh, and you may want to sit down while reading what I have to say about MM9 (skip to the bottom). I’m going to make the whole Internet hate me.

Game Review: Tales of Vesperia (360)

Tales of Vesperia for the Xbox 360 is Namco’s latest in their Tales series of anime-styled role playing games. But is it worth hours and hours and hours of your time? Read on to find out.

Cary’s Favorite 2-D Side-Scrolling Beat ‘Em Ups

In honor of Castle Crashers being released on Xbox Live Arcade recently, I figured I’d list my favorite 2-D side-scrolling beat ‘em ups.

Game Review: SoulCalibur IV (360, PS3)

I HATE fighting games. I stink at them so badly and I can’t figure out all those button combinations and moves. I’m lucky if I can make Ryu poop out a fireball! However, even though I detest fighting games, I still really like SoulCalibur IV. That’s how good it is.

PAX with Children

I’ve gotten several emails and a comment here from people who want to attend PAX but have very small children. The advice I’d recently posted is aimed for the non-gamer parent who had been dragged through the doors by their teen/tween and didn’t know what to do.

My gang is way past the age of having to worry about, and my solution when they were that age was to stay home. That said, they were that age back in 1990 or so and things have changed a bit since then. I have some very general advice but I put out a call to some experts, the Penny Arcade Enforcers, and got a few pointers. more…

Gaming With Children: Vacation Edition

I love getting to play games with my kids, or even watch each other play for a while.  One of the best times for this is when we are on vacation, as we always seem to have dead time and plenty of travel time.  So I had a grand time on our recent trip to Ontario - and although I focused more on reading books, there were three games in particular that we shared. more…

Civilization Revolution … with Children

Civ? Me and Civ? Yeah, we go a long way back. I still recall the day, just prior to my career in gaming actually, when I stood in the store torn. Should I buy Quake? Or Sid Meier’s Civilization II. The one with the monsters and visceral thrills? Or the one with the pedigree, the elephant on the cover, and the one that looked fiercely, defiantly, and wonderfully beautiful and complex. I came home with both, I’m proud to say.

Convention Survival Kit for Parents

It’s convention season again. Things are in high swing for the months of August and September. Here’s a few handy tips for parents who are just getting into this sort of thing from someone who’s been to way too many of these and lived to tell the tale.

Whether it’s a small-town game convention with just a couple thousand to the over 125,000 people who mobbed the San Diego Comic Con in 2007, there are a few things that always seem to come up in common. What do I do? How do I find out what’s going on? Don’t these people ever take a shower?

Battlefield: Bad Company

Bad Company? I can’t deny it.  I thought I was done with the Battlefield series of video games. I delighted in the WWII exploits of 1942 and played some BF: Viet Nam and BF2. When the series went futuristic I bowed out but something - probably the happy faced grenade pin - lured me back. I opened my mail and found the 360 version. “Fine, I’ll trade it maybe and get the PC version.” Wait… there is no PC version?
