Sim City for Free & for Kids
One of the games that got me back into gaming back in College (I mean aside from getting a job and finally upgrading my computer) was the first SimCity. Wil Wright’s genius design showed me - and I had no idea at the time how this would echo into my life and career close to 20 years later - that games could be fun and introduce some really hard to teach concepts to kids AND adults. Not perfect, sure, but my basic understanding of city concerns like zoning and property value come from this game. Well, EA has done a wonderful thing. The press release follows:
GamerDad on ABC WISN News 12 at 6pm Tonight!
I got an email today asking where in Wisconsin I lived and whether or not I cared to comment further on Manhunt 2’s release, video game violence, and related issues. I quickly called back and told them I was about 15 minutes away. One hour later a van pulled up and I was interviewed for tonight’s broadcast. Don’t worry, I’ll be sure to post the video or link to the site, once it’s in place.
This isn’t the first time we’ve had this opportunity. We’ve been on the local news in San Francisco, Seattle, and Philadelphia. But this marks the first time my home town has acknowledged my existence and that’s somehow more gratifying. more…
GamerDad to ESRB: Why is Halo 3 Rated M-Mature?
In the four years since I launched GamerDad.com, we’ve only disagreed with the Entertainment Software Ratings Board a handful to times. We felt that The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion deserved an M-Mature ( the ESRB actually changed the rating soon after, but not because of us) and we’ve always felt that Microsoft’s best selling Halo series was far more PG-13 than Rated R - or to put it in ESRB speak, T-Teen versus M-Mature. Despite the purple and blue alien blood, Halo has always seemed so… tame to those of us actually familiar with M-rated fare. Well, Halo 3 comes out today and it’s sure to be a massive hit, but once again the ESRB has rated it M-Mature. I received my copy on Friday and I’ve played through most of the short single player campaign and I keep asking myself the same question, over and over again: Why is this game rated M-Mature? more…
GamerDad & The Stranger
I was going to spotlight this earlier - almost a month ago - but, y’know, a Quadruple Bypass kinda gets in the way of the best laid plans. Anyway, it’s a little out of date but Seattle’s premiere ultra-cool news daily, The Stranger, did a little daily write up of the Penny-Arcade Expo and in their Sunday coverage, they devoted most of it . . . to me!
An Open Letter to PAX ‘07 Attendees

My name is Andrew S. Bub and I run a site called GamerDad.com and GameSanityblog.com. The purpose of GamerDad is to go beyond the ESRB ratings and help parents. The purpose of GameSanityblog is to comment on games more intelligently than most - and to reflect the political advocacy work I do. more…
PAX mini-update #2 - Done, can’t sleep!
At E3 2006 I ran into Tycho of Penny-Arcade. He told me that he loves GamerDad and that I should come to PAX because: “The people there are young but cool and one day they’re all going to be big fans of your website.” I came to PAX last year and found he was right. Lots of parents, but lots more young cute gaming couples. Future families. I had to return this year. So I did. I came to PAX and I hope I conquered, but most of all, I had a hell of a good time. I ended up doing a bit more work than scheduled too. Here’s how it went, in brief: more…
