10 Attacks on Videogames in 2007
A gamer calling himself Recoton2007 has compiled a video of the top 10 attacks from the mainstream media regarding videogames in 2007 (taken from GameTrailers.com). It showcases why we do what we do and why it’s important. Go ahead and watch the video while I comment on them one by one. I can’t seem to embed this video, so please come back after clicking the link.
bad economics for kids
So the Sierra Club and others in New Mexico wants to push an initiative called “Leave No Child Inside”. That is fantastic! I love the idea of an initiative that will build a love of the outdoors and of an active lifestyle for an increasingly sedentary - and overweight - population. So where does the money come from? A 1% tax on video games, TV’s and associated hardware. Oh. In other words, we are going to incentivize young kids by taxing their parents. Huh?
Mass Effect Misinformation
Can you believe people actually think this game has hardcore pornography? Well, don’t take my word for
it. Take Colleen Hannon’s. She’s our MomGamer (no relation) and she cuts right through the garbage. Here’s what parents need to know!
Mediawise Isn’t - 2007
We’re proud to prove once again why people who don’t play video games need to hire some actual gamers as fact checkers if they ever want to, y’know, actually help parents. Our own Colleen Hannon, the MomGamer (no relation) has crafted this excellent look at where MediaWise isn’t wise at all. (MediaWise please contact me if you’d like our help next year. Thanks!)
Visceral Gaming and Vote Grabbing
Four senators known for their anti-gaming stance have decided to weigh in on the waning Manhunt 2 controversy by sending a rather pointed letter to the head of the ESRB asking, among other things, that the game’s M rating be reconsidered.
Please don’t ‘white-wash’ the future!
In an age when there is so much made of how kids are becoming detached and lack responsibility due - according to some - in part to spending too much time playing video games, it is sad to see news of where a teen student tried to make a difference and was shut down by the adults who are supposed to be serving his needs and those of all of our children.
… and these guys want us to trust them to run the country?
Last week following the latest Republican Debate (#435 if my count is correct) the airwaves in the Boston area were buzzing because of Mitt Romney. Now here is someone who had run for Senator previously, claimed Massachusetts as his home state, and even been Governor for four years which included 2004 - and yet he failed to identify the most commonly used number in the state back in ‘04 : 86 years.

Dems + GOP = Game Censorship?
Well, it seems a few Senators, including a Democratic Front Runner and a former GOP candidate attacked the ESRB and their changed M-rating of Manhunt 2 today. They want a “review of the ratings process” (something the MPAA that rates movies has never endured) and Manhunt 2 to be re-rated as Adults Only. First a bit of background: Manhunt 2 originally got an AO rating and was banned by the UK. Rockstar Games made the requested changes (which the ESRB doesn’t disclose) and netted an M-Mature. The resulting game stinks, but not because of this self-censorship. Okay, caught up? Quote, link, and analysis follows:
Sim City for Free & for Kids
One of the games that got me back into gaming back in College (I mean aside from getting a job and finally upgrading my computer) was the first SimCity. Wil Wright’s genius design showed me - and I had no idea at the time how this would echo into my life and career close to 20 years later - that games could be fun and introduce some really hard to teach concepts to kids AND adults. Not perfect, sure, but my basic understanding of city concerns like zoning and property value come from this game. Well, EA has done a wonderful thing. The press release follows:
