I have been an unabashed Star Wars fan for 31 years now, saw Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein more than 30 years ago, and was therefore terribly excited back in ‘87 when a crew of friends I’d made during high school and college assembled in Boston to see Mel Brook’s SpaceBalls. So what happened?

Horton the elephant introduced me to science-fiction. Or, more accurately, Dr. Seuss did. The idea that an entire civilization might be located on a speck, and that speck is located on a clover, and that clover is held in the trunk of an elephant? Then what if WE are. . . yep, introduced me to sci-fi - and to philosphy, come to think of it.

The making of the film required overcoming the daunting challenge of compressing the events that have kept young readers enthralled from volume to volume into a ninety minute feature with a single story arc.

The Mini Games of Duck Amuck

In the 1953 Looney Tunes cartoon Duck Amuck by Chuck Jones, an unseen animator bugs the crap out of Daffy Duck, with hilarious results. And this past year, a Nintendo DS game was made with that same concept and title. As a fan of cartoons, I was mildy curious about this game, but didn’t want to play full price for it. I’m sorry, GameCrazy, but it’s just not worth 35 bucks. Luckily I found it for 20 bucks elsewhere, so I decided to snag it.
Son of Godzilla!

Godzilla Unleashed from Atari is a mediocre game in what is sadly a mediocre series. But that doesn’t mean it can’t be fun, especially with a 5-year old! It brings me back. My Aunt Bev, bless her for it, took me to see, in the theater, Godzilla vs. Megalon. I must have been 4 or 5 years old myself and I was awed. It began a real love of Godzilla movies that lasted long into my childhood. Despite that mediocrity the love is back, because my son thinks Godzilla is super cool!
Go You Packers!

I’m a football fan who was born in Wisconsin. I grew up where the Steelers, then Bears, then Rams (well, once), then Niners play their games but in the back of my mind I was a Packer fan. The story of Lambeau, Lombardi, Starr, Neitzche, McGee, and the rest was known to me and I always cringed when people made fun of the hapless Pack. I didn’t watch a lot of football as a result. The one-two-punch of Football videogaming (it was Real Talk Joe Montana for Genesis if you must know) and the Forty-Niners winning the Superbowl while I was in SF and in college made me a fan again. Moving to Wisconsin in 1995 - just as White, Holmgren and Favre were getting started - made the Packers my obsession. Madden, year-after-year made me a fan of the game itself.
