Iron Mom! - Mother’s Day ‘08
Linda declined Breakfast-in-Bed, which is a good thing because the one time we did that the kids got all the breakfast (and juice ended up on the stairs). So, I got up with the kids despite insomnia last night and we dutifully waited until 8:30am. 8:30am is what Linda and I call “sleepin’ in late” because our lovely Henry - apple of our eyes - likes to get up between 5am and 6:30am. (Really, he’s lucky to still be alive!) Anyway, here’s our Mom’s Day Adventure:
Idol Thoughts: The Final Bore
OK, so by now we know that the auditions we see aren’t what really happen in the early rounds, that not everyone sees the judges, that the producers push certain contestants, that the words the judges use are tailored to get a certain response from the audience, and most recently that the judges words are either prepared or scripted. No biggie …after all, this IS a reality show, not a singing contest.
Idol Thoughts: Undiscovered Talent
One of the great ideals underpinning American Idol is the thought that you can witness a scene like out of a 1940’s movie where a girl working in a restaurant does something nice and the right guy in the right place says “baby, I’m gonna make you a star” - then he does. Or like other movies of the era where an A&R guy is looking for a new talent and someone drags him to a butcher shop promising “you just HAVE to hear this voice”, which ends up landing a likeable working class guy with a huge record contract. In other words, aside from watching people make fools of themselves intentionally in the tryouts, the allure of American Idol is that someone who has had to forego their dreams of being a singer can emerge as a polished talent and see their dreams fulfilled.
What is it with Spaceballs?
I have been an unabashed Star Wars fan for 31 years now, saw Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein more than 30 years ago, and was therefore terribly excited back in ‘87 when a crew of friends I’d made during high school and college assembled in Boston to see Mel Brook’s SpaceBalls. So what happened?
Go! Go! Susumu! Driller No. 1!
In honor of Mr. Driller Online being released on Xbox Live last week, I thought I’d do a tribute blog to all things Driller. Though you may want to skip down to the bottom of this blog first for a quick warning about Mr. Driller Online. Almost didn’t make me want to write a Mr. Driller blog right there, but I still like Mr. Driller so I wrote this anyway.
Horton Hears a Who - Review
Horton the elephant introduced me to science-fiction. Or, more accurately, Dr. Seuss did. The idea that an entire civilization might be located on a speck, and that speck is located on a clover, and that clover is held in the trunk of an elephant? Then what if WE are. . . yep, introduced me to sci-fi - and to philosphy, come to think of it.
Review: The Spiderwick Chronicles (Movie)
The Spiderwick Chronicles is a series of five books released over the past five years and recently adapted into a film. The making of the film required overcoming the daunting challenge of compressing the events that have kept young readers enthralled from volume to volume into a ninety minute feature with a single story arc.

The Mini Games of Duck Amuck
In the 1953 Looney Tunes cartoon Duck Amuck by Chuck Jones, an unseen animator bugs the crap out of Daffy Duck, with hilarious results. And this past year, a Nintendo DS game was made with that same concept and title. As a fan of cartoons, I was mildy curious about this game, but didn’t want to play full price for it. I’m sorry, GameCrazy, but it’s just not worth 35 bucks. Luckily I found it for 20 bucks elsewhere, so I decided to snag it.
Son of Godzilla!
Godzilla Unleashed from Atari is a mediocre game in what is sadly a mediocre series. But that doesn’t mean it can’t be fun, especially with a 5-year old! It brings me back. My Aunt Bev, bless her for it, took me to see, in the theater, Godzilla vs. Megalon. I must have been 4 or 5 years old myself and I was awed. It began a real love of Godzilla movies that lasted long into my childhood. Despite that mediocrity the love is back, because my son thinks Godzilla is super cool!
