Ask GamerDad 3/14/08

300×100_gamerdad.gifSorry, I was out of town and didn’t link this one when it went up. It looks like I’m on a roll now. The questions for my exclusive WhatTheyPlay column are getting harder and better - and more numerous - and I’m starting to have a really good time answering them. This week I tackle: Super Smash Bros for the under E-10+ set; Bilingual gaming; “I’m 61 can you help me find X in game Y?”; Gaming with Kindergartners, and a pressing question involving lunch meat. All this and more, follow the link!

No Joy in Green Bay

bubtv2FOX Sports announced today that Green Bay Packers QB Brett Favre is retiring. Thus ending the longest consecutive start streak of a QB ever, more records broken then I care to count, and a career that lasted well into his 30’s.  He went out slinging, his last pass was an overtime Interception in the NFC Championship but the weather was below zero and . . . we in our late 30’s can’t take the cold like we used to. I understood.

Berzerk - Memory Lane

memorylane.jpg“Coin detected in pocket!”… Said the arcade machine. “What? Huh. Yeah!” I responded. Sure enough there was so I dropped it into the slot and I became Han Solo, for lack of a better persona, and stalked the corridors of some base flinging fiery ruin at the robots (a cross between Stormtroopers and Cylons, in my mind) that impeded my progress.“Intruder Alert! Intruder Alert!”

Review - Endless Ocean

In case you haven’t noticed, I like to spice up my BioShock, Rainbowendlesso.jpg Six: Vegas, Rock Band, and other grown-up games with games that can best be described as “cute and quirky.” I admire imaginative gaming - and feel these kinds of casual games are very good for kids. I also believe gaming is all about doing things you can’t normally do (fly a plane, drive a race car, combat terrorism, or save the world from various kinds of aliens - zombies - or alien zombies). (Note to self, try and pitch alien-zombie idea to a game developer.)

The Most Significant Trend of 2007

buzz1.jpg As someone who watches this industry closely (and is no longer particularly impressed by hype or “flavors du jour” I like to look back at a year and think about what happened in the game industry to change things. Past examples are Xbox Live, the Nintendo DS, Guitar Hero, and last year I picked the Nintendo Wii for it’s potential to bring mainstreamers into the fold and expand the market, and acceptance, of video games. So, what’s the significant happening this year? (Is GamerDad going to talk about Rock Band again?)

Family Game of 2007

goty113small.gifPicking the best game of any given year is difficult. That’s why you’ll see that most magazines and websites cheat and cram as many categories as they possibly can - so as many games can win as possible. To me the question is simple. I’m not looking for excellence (Mario Galaxy) so much as I’m looking for impact. I’m looking for the game we’ll remember that year for. And that game, for 2007 inarguably is . . .

Space Invaders - Memory Lane

memorylane.jpgWelcome to the first edition of Memory Lane. A place here at GamerDad where we take a look at the past and reminisce about the games, the toys, the movies, the books, that transformed us from kids to teens to adults to dads and finally, to GamerDads.

Wii Fit gets US Release Date

wii-fit.jpgThis literally just in - from a Golan Harris (Nintendo of America’s PR company) press release. News I’ve been waiting for. This thing is selling like . . . selling like Wii’s frankly.  I’m excited about this not on a geek level (well, GamerMom’s interest is real) - this kind of thing changes everything. It’s another pebble rolling down the slope, the mainstream video game avalanche is poised to begin.
