Game Review: Wipeout: The Game (Wii, DS)

Wipeout: The Game is based on the popular game show on the ABC TV network. Similar to other shows like MXC or Ninja Warrior, Wipeout challenges contestants to run obstacle courses over water or mud, and not get knocked off or tripped up in the process. Now you can relive the wacky obstacles of Wipeout on the DS or Wii (DS version reviewed here).

First, choose from a half dozen crazy characters to be your contestant. Then enter them in TV Mode for a series of challenges based on the television show. Jump on precarious platforms, duck under rotating bars, block projectiles, and run to the goal as fast as you can. If you win TV Mode, you’ll unlock courses in Obstacle Mode. Clear these under the time limit to unlock more courses and characters to play as.

The 3-D graphics on the DS are pretty impressive and really bring out the spirit of the TV show. Helping to add to the theme is real life voiced commentary from the three official announcers of Wipeout. Unfortunately, the jumping controls are a bit floaty and if you don’t land squarely on the platforms, you’ll fall. To be honest, if I wanted to play a 2-D obstacle jumping platform game, I’d rather play something like Mario. But fans of the Wipeout TV show may still enjoy this game.

Kid Factor:

Wipeout: The Game is rated E for Everyone with an ESRB descriptor of Comic Mischief. Players can get tossed and smacked around, but nobody gets hurt. Some of the obstacles have slightly off color names like “Big Balls.” But if you’re OK with your kids watching the TV show, they’ll be OK with the game, too. Reading skill is helpful for the text instructions before each event. Some younger kids might also get frustrated with the controls and difficulty.
