i am 13 and think red dead redemption is mostly fine although there is one achievement that says you have to place a hogtied women on train tracks and witness her death but of course you dont have to do this and left for dead is fine it may have blood and gore they are zombies and therfore are not alive so its not like going up to an innocent man and shooting him

Krazy Koala, It's not illegal to buy your kids M rated games, I'm 17 (and been "illegally" buying them since I was 14) and Left 4 dead, eh, It does have quite a bit of blood and gore, but what you want to look at is the reasons it's happening. I.E zombie horde coming after you, self defense or get eating alive? also even though it has alot, It's not as depictive as let's say Gears of war, or Call of duty World at War. It has minor language (which, let's face it every kid on the face of the planet has heard ATLEAST one F or S word from their dad accidentally spilling oil into his face while fixing the car).

All in all, I think with, like every other M rated game in existence, it boils down to the kids capabilities to discern reality from virtuality, the maturity level(not HIS AGE). So, Even though I'm not even an adult yet, I think he could very well handle it without any repercussions.....hahahaha if you call anything that could happen a repercussion>.>

Hey Gamerdad,

I'm a parent of a 14 year old and a seven year old. They're both boys (if that is applicable - I'm not being sexist) and my oldest wants to play Left 4 Dead. I know it's M, and I know my youngest isn't going to be even near it, but is it suitable for my 14 year old? I'm not too keen on violence and blood, but I would rather have him kill zombies than innocent children.

And, if I do get him L4D, is it illegal? Sorry I'm new to these M and AO games.
Thanks,
Krazy Koala

I think it is great that Zack is not only aware of what he is capable of handling and not, as evidenced by his reference to Fallout 3, and that he doesn't want to waste time and effort asking for games that are way out there. Kudos to you Zack. And to your Mom for understanding that not all "violent" games are the same.

GamerDad's advice is, as usual, spot on. The bottom line is Zack and his mom need to work together to make an informed decision. All GamerDad, and the rest of us, can do is tell them what is in the games and let them decide what is and isn't acceptable for Zack.

Personally, I have played Mass Effect and a little of Bioshock and I think that Bioshock is by far the scarier and potentially more harmful of the two. The violence in Mass Effect is no worse than the other games he has played, and is actually less than them. And the "sex" scene in it is tamer than what you see on prime time and daytime tv. But that's my 2 cents. Like GD said, video of that scene is readily available on YouTube and his mom, and others, can make that call after viewing it.

How about just following the ESRB rating? Period. It may not be perfect, but at least it gives some guide to what may be appropriate. Also, take your mom along while making your decisions. I am sure she will help. Peruse the websites and read some of the reviews/previews. When making a choice, make sure it is an informed one. That will help not only in your gaming but the rest of your life as well.

Well, the ESRB makes no distinction at all between the language of one and the language of the other. And since language means very little to me in a world where people blast explicit rap out of cars....
Still, good point Wampa, I'd forgotten about the language aspect. Man, see how hard this is? I'm supposed to remember everything about everything. I've played both but remember noticing gratuitous language in either.

Also, its refreshing to see a 13 year old not complaining about what games he can and can't get, and actually admitting some games are too mature for him.
