Game Review: Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection (360, PS3)

sonic_boxDon’t let the name fool you, there’s more than just Sonic on this great collection! This is a compilation of around 40 or so 16-bit Sega Genesis console titles, with some unlockable 8-bit Sega Master System and arcade classics thrown in for good measure. With tons of extras and features, plus a low price tag, it’s a must-have collection for classic game fans.

There’s something for everyone in this collection. 2-D side-scrolling beat ‘em ups like the Golden Axe and Streets of Rage trilogies. Role playing games like the first four Phantasy Star series and the Shining Force titles. Platform jumping games like Sonic The Hedgehog and Ristar. Plus unlockable arcade classics like Space Harrier and Zaxxon. And many more. For a more detailed description of each of the games on this collection, plus my personal experiences with them, click here.

Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection has other added features and extras as well. Adjust the screen size for every game and save and quit at any time on each title. View box art and read up on interesting facts on each game. And watch interviews with some of the games’ creators. And at only 30 bucks, this collection is a steal for classic game fans.

Kid Factor:
Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection is rated E-10 for Everyone 10 and up with ESRB descriptors of Animated Blood and Violence. Most of the games are cartoony and kid friendly. Kids love Sonic, and they’ll enjoy playing many of the simple classics on here. Some of the 2-D brawlers are a little violent and a few of the games have rudimentary 16-bit gore. But because of the nature of these older games, none of the violence is very graphic or realistic and I’d be OK with just about any kid playing these classics. Reading is helpful for some of these games, and they can be a little difficult at times because many are based on arcade titles.

  1. Great game – I purchased it for nostalgia and the PSN trophies!!

Another platinum trophy added to the list, this was easy as I have played through most of these games when I was younger … finished it in less than a week.

  2. Yeah most of the achievements are easy to get. If I can do it, anyone can! –Cary

  3. I was happy to see Vectorman and Vectorman 2 on the list of games. Overall it seems like a great collction of games. Too bad they didn’t include later sega games like on Saturn and stuff. Sonic CD isn’t on that list is it? I had the pc version of that game, but I can’t find it 🙁

  4. EDIT : whoops didn’t see it was called genesis collection. But still Sonic CD was technically genesis.

  5. It’s also misleading because there’s arcade and Master System games on this Genesis collection. Just get Sonic Gems Collection on the GameCube, that has Sonic CD on it. –Cary

  6. I have that collection too :P. I have it lent out though. My 5 year old neighbor likes borrowing games and I thought that was simple and fun enough for him. He’s got a wii and I don’t use my GC so I’ve been letting him borrow here and there.

  7. I recently came across your blog and have been reading along. I thought I would leave my first comment. I don’t know what to say except that I have enjoyed reading. Nice blog. I will keep visiting this blog very often.
