Game Review: Naruto: Path of the Ninja 2 (DS)

That superstar anime cartoon and manga comic book ninja boy Naruto is back on another video game adventure. This time, the loud-mouthed, ramen scarfing, orange clad ninja embarks on a typical turned based role-playing game.

Naruto: Path of the Ninja 2 is just your typical RPG with Naruto characters, settings, and storyline. Just as in other RPGs, gather clues, items, and missions in the Hidden Leaf Village, then tromp off to forests and caves to defeat monsters, gain experience, and level up. Battles are turn-based, and while you can have only three characters and a fourth reserve in your party, up to 30 different Naruto characters can join in your adventures. Use Chakra points for special Ninjitsu magic for more powerful attacks. You can control the game with the stylus and touch screen or the D-pad and buttons. They do a good job explaining the basics of gameplay at the beginning of the game, too. By exchanging friend codes, you can even battle people online through Wi-Fi.

The only main problem with this Naruto RPG is it feels a little dated by today’s standards. The frequent unseen enemy random encounters get old after a while, and it can be a little hard to know where to go if you haven’t played in a long time. Plus, there’s no option to turn off Naruto’s annoying voice. I swear if I hear him say “Let’s make some noise,” during battle one more time, I’m going to have to strangle somebody. If you don’t know anything about Naruto, you may have a hard time getting into this RPG. Definitely for the fans only.

Kid Factor:
Naruto: Path of the Ninja 2 is rated E-10 for Everyone 10 and Up with ESRB descriptors of Crude Humor, Mild Cartoon Violence, and Suggestive Themes. Even though you battle enemies, they only disappear when defeated. Most of the violence, crude humor and suggestive themes are in the text only, although Naruto does have an attack where he makes a female illusion to confuse enemies. Good reading ability is a must as everything is text based. If you’re OK with your kids watching the Naruto cartoon or comic book, they’ll be OK with the game, too.
