May I recommend the soundtrack from a little known PC game called "Entomorph - Plague of the Darkfall". It's superb and mixes several genres.

Then of course I'd recommend the soundtrack for Ultima 6 and 7 :-)

Back @ mike, I see. I pretty much grew up on the SNES. TMNT IV had a surprisingly killer soundtrack as well. I do see your point though. I was never a PC gamer because my computers were always a processor generation behind. My dad always got his pc's for free from work.

In my play list right now....

Just about anything from Final Fantasy. The real orchestral renditions that were done for the tours are amazing. See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jzz5cVt70j8&feature=related and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dYecLvwOiVA&feature=related. Or try http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uMIv94qVraY&feature=related for something a little less schmaltzy.

Or if you'd like a little guitar, try The Black Mages - that's Uematsu's instrumental rock band. Try http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d3T8AmEMxqs&feature=related and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T6VTl3VBAhY&feature=related and see what you think. They've supposedly got a new disk coming out soon, too.

The disks from the Play! concerts are also pretty good. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Play%21_A_Video_Game_Symphony

I also like a lot of nerdcore like the Minibosses (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Minibosses) , who do guitar-metal versions of many old Nintendo classics.

I like all three of the Halo soundtrack CDs.

The Metal Gear Solid soundtracks are fantastic, cinematic affairs. Unsurprising when Harry Gregson-Williams is the composer for 2, 3, and 4.

My other two favorites come close to being licensed collections, but they both largely focus on tracks specially created or mixed for their respective games - Rez and Jet Set Radio.

DJ - you have to consider that I have historically been pretty much the poster child for the hardcore PC gamer. I like the themes for things like Mario and Zelda, but unlike the soundtracks mentioned above, in too many console games I find that the short-loop themes play about 500 thousand times ... and I have therefore never needed to hear them again ;)

Surprised not to see Mario up there. Not sure if that's buy-able but I've found orchastral versions of the themes mixed together. I was listening to Super Mario Bros. in Super Mario All-stars on my sister's new gaming chair and it was great. Bass and everything. So much fun to listen to. Just about all first party Nintendo games have a great soundtrack. GTA as well.

So let me pose the question further ... I know Cary has been to game music concerts, but what does everyone have in their listening collection (if not iPod like me).

I have imported a fair amount of stuff (or been fortunate to get it due to my review duties at different sites) such as Two Worlds, Gothic 3, and Crisis Core that I can think of right now ...

I'm also a game-music freak. The soundtrack to Eternal Sonata is amazing.
