Fallout 3: Preorder game, get … stuff

The associate at GameStop asked “Would you like to preorder Fallout 3 for the PS3 or XBOX360”?  After deciding that I would not immediately kill the kid for forgetting that this is a PC franchise we’re talking about here, I said “PC version, standard not collector’s edition”.  He said ‘oh’, rather surprised, but proceeded to take my money and give me the item that was the reason I pre-ordered the game about four months in advance:  a DVD case containing a large poster and what looked like a 45RPM I might have bought thirty years or so ago.

Here is what the music disk looks like from the front:

There is also a poster (~16 x 20) that looks much like the box at the top, but without the ‘Games for Windows’ and ESRB label, but definitely with a HUGE Bethesda logo.

Is it worth it?  Not really – I had gone under the impression that you would get a soundtrack CD and hadn’t read about the sparse sampling you actually get.  The two originals are available for download from the official Fallout 3 site, and that leaves the poster that I will never hang on a wall.  Then there is the whole ‘playing into GameStops evil plans’ thing.  But on the other hand, I will have the game when it comes out in September.

  1. I’m going to have to go check this out. I should have asked about it when I picked up my Wii Fit and We Ski yesterday but I was in a terrible hurry.

  2. I can’t wait for the PS3 version.

Colleen, have you tried Wii Fit yet? I haven’t had a chance to get everything set up yet.

  3. Ooooooooohhhhh Fallout 3. I still have the CDs form 1 & 2. Can’t wait.

I go the Wii Fit as well, set it up and tried it out a little. Pretty cool. Just make sure you wait until the game asks you to Sync the balance board. If you try to do it beforehand it won’t work.

  4. Are you generally supposed to get something extra for having preordered a basic version of a game? I thought the purpose of preordering was just to be sure that you were one of those to get a copy when it’s released. You didn’t end up spending anything more than the retail price for the basic game, I presume — the only difference being that some of that money was in GameStop’s accounts early.

On the other hand, I had been considering (pre)ordering a collectors’ edition for the extras (like the lunchbox) but haven’t done so, mostly because I’m a cheapskate, and because I’m waiting for reviews before I’ll end up paying for a copy. It’s not like I’ve run out of games to be playing right now.

  5. Pre-ordering a ‘standard edition’ often includes a virtual item, such as a special weapon or a bonus skill for a RPG. But I have never gotten anything physical before.

Part of the reason I don’t get collector’s editions – even for games I love – is that I am not a collector. I toss boxes and just keep the discs and manuals. There have been a few cases where I got collector’s editions for the same price, and that is fine. But paying $20 *more*? Not gonna happen for me …

  6. We preorder almost everything just because of the way I plan in advance. I’ve gotten stuff with both standard and special editions with preorders. Mario Galaxy gave out that collector’s coin even with the regular. We got the DS stylus with Pokemon Pearl, but we didn’t get the Phantom Hourglass one.

Our Gamecrazy store offers a second bonus. Each pre-order gives you a rent one get one free coupon at the attached video store good for anything in the store. If you preorder a lot like I do, it really cuts down on the rental fees.

It is kind of annoying in one way. They’ve had my preorders for FFXIII and MGS4 since before the PS3 launch. When stuff slips out like that they end up with your money for a long time.

  7. I’m going to get the collector’s edition of Soul Calibur 4 when it comes out because I have this ‘problem’ with Namco stuff. 🙂

I only preorder something when the pre-order bonus is something I like, such as the Phoenix Wright “Objection” pointy finger stylus.

Though I have been order more games online lately (with free shipping) since gas prices are so much nowadays. Now I don’t have to drive to the game store (which I do like doing sometimes). –Cary

  8. I don’t use the Phantom Hourglass stylus, but my kids have their Pokemon stylii … and my NWN2 rings … and who knows what else.

I have never been a fan of pre-ordering, but with dwindling shelf-space for PC games and GameStop getting smaller quantities of stuff, it makes more sense.

  9. At croaker, personally I’d like something extra for taking the risk of pre-ordering. I’ve only pre-ordered once, LoZ – WW, because I wanted the master quest disc since I hadn’t played OoT, but for some reason Amazon wouldn’t give it to me, so I ended up buying it at my favorite used electronics store for 15 bucks. But anyway, if you haven’t read the reviews a few people sort of got screwed when they pre-ordered Haze. I mean I don’t blindly follow opinions like that but a 4.5 from IGN? ouch.

  10. I have ogtten the game and i would say it is phenomanal and is the best game i have EVER played. Although it is the most violent, but thats ok with me.
